Almost 200 hundred men, women and children laid down on the ice of Lake Superior Sunday to spell the message “SOS Protect Our Water” with their bodies. The display, labeled “Bodies on the Ice”, was photographed aerially before the group stood up and joined hands, forming a large circle.
Activists working to expose environmental hazards related to Gogebic Taconite’s efforts to establish an iron mine in the Penokee Hills organized the messaging event to highlight the potential for pollution of the Bad River watershed. The Bad River runs thorough the Penokee Hills and is also the name of the Bad River Tribe of Lake Superior Chippewa who rely on the watershed to maintain traditional lifestyles. According to a Facebook page promoting Bodies on the Ice, “the aim of the message will be to call attention to the madness of threatening the water of Lake Superior through the reckless mining of the Penokees.”

Excellent, keep up the good work. Unfortunately not everyone can always participate.
