Line #5 running through Bayfield County.
The US Forest Service is accepting public comments until January 6, 2017 regarding the permitting of the portion of Enbridge Energy Partners pipeline Line #5 that runs through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest north of Highway 2 in Bayfield County, Wisconsin. The permit includes 11.5 miles of pipeline and spans roughly 71 acres of public land.

Background
Enbridge Line #5 runs hundreds of miles through Wisconsin, Canada and Michigan, transporting 23 million gallons of light crude and liquid natural gas each day. At 63 years old, it sits underneath the Straits of Mackinac coated in layers of invasive zebra mussels and is subject to the random currents of the Great Lakes. Environmentalists say a spill would devastate economy of all five Great Lakes.
Bad River pipelines
Bad River Reservation: Enbridge has been operating with an expired permit for the portion of Line #5 that runs through the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation. Not only did the pipeline’s permit expired in 2013, Line #5 was built in 1953 and is 13 years beyond its 50-year life expectancy. The line carries 540,000 barrels of Alberta Tar Sands oil each day and poses an extreme risk to the Penokee and Ashland County watershed.
Straits of Mackinac, Michigan: In April 2016, 22 environmental and tribal groups formally requested that Michigan Govenor Snyder and Attorney General Schuette shut down Line #5 in the Straits of Mackinac based on Enbridge’s multiple easement violations. On January 1, 2017 beginning at 12 AM, there will be 24-hour prayer vigil at the 100-year high water mark near the Mackinaw Bridge between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
Kalamazoo, MI: July 2016 marked the five-year anniversary of the Kalamazoo spill from Enbridge Line #6B, which sent 843,000 gallons of crude tar sands oil into the tributary of the Kalamazoo River. In the video below, John Bolenbaugh blows the whistle on Enbridge, documenting their cover up of the spill. His investigation was reported by a Michigan news station, which forced Enbridge to continue their clean up, which they claimed they had already completed. Bolenbaugh was a former employee for an oil spill clean-up company that contracted with Enbridge.

To those involved,
Enbridge is not a truthful company. They had the whistle blown on them by a clean-up contractor. They had claimed that they were finished with the clean-up of the spill in Kalamazoo.
It was exposed that this was not the truth. Because of West Michigan news stations, they resumed a clean-up that they had lied about being done.
Enbridge has been operating with an expired permit on part of Line #5 since 2013. Line #5 was built in 1953. The people now have these requests:
1) Do not renew Enbridge’s permit for Line #5.
2) Require Enbridge to remove Line #5 from USFS land.
3) Schedule a Public Hearing in Bayfield County regarding the permit before a decision is made by the USFS.

Please do not renew Enbridge’s permit for Line #5. It is sheer insanity to run oil pipelines through public land and through major water sources such as the Great Lakes. These pipelines should ALL be removed and the fossil fuel industry should be made to pay for the removal and the cleanup of all the environmental damage they have caused. Enbridge MUST remove Line #5 from USFS land. A Public Hearing must be held in Bayfield County regarding the permit before a decision is made by the USFS.
Furthermore, it is a travesty that Enbridge is permitted to damage and destroy the Bad River Reservation and that they have had the gall to do so with no permit since 2013. Enbridge must be required to remove their ancient, decrepit pipelines, clean up the area, pay for the cleanup and damages.
Fossil fuel is a dead dinosaur. Fossil fuel executives know very well that it is OBSOLETE, so they rush to install infrastructure all over our nation to force US to keep on using this destructive, expensive, dangerous form of energy. The fossil fuel industry needs to clean up its act and move into the 21st Century.

It is time to consider the removal of the number 5 pipeline. It is past its safe usage time. I am not anti oil. I am for clean water. Our water sources are being depleated and poisoned by bigmbusiness and it must stop. The forestry dept and our people in washington need to look out for us all. Not just big business. At the rate those who honor and worship capitalism in this country, that’s the rate we are totally destroying ourselves and our environment. We’re literally dying here. Big business does not give one damn about people nor environment, nor the health of the planet. The only thing that matters to them is money. Are these not crimes against humanity? I do not believe corporations have the will or desire to preserve and protect this fragile planet, money is and always will be their objective, so needless to say i am totally against this pipeline. I think we should be very careful when putting in pipelines. The benefits are relevant and good enough that they are worth it in my opinion. But they should be checked up on and maintained very well to help protect our environment.
PLease define “benefits are relevant and good enough that they are worth it.” How do you factor in the illegal seizure of private property for a pipeline that will not provide oil for the US? Also, the reputation of Enbridge is one of, for example, covering up their leaks, then lying about how they were “cleaned up.” See our article about John Boulenbaugh.
Also, are you comfortable with a corporate like Enbridge having a private army to commit violence against the water protectors, many and most of whom at STanding Rock were on Treaty Land, with treaties being violated and our constitutional rights suspended so that Enbridge can make profits?
And are you willing to go to a public hearing and have YOUR constitutional rights suspended, like Winona LaDuke did, when she attended a hearing and asked if they were going to bring their armies to northern MN to do to them what they did to Standing Rock in North Dakota? LaDuke was escorted by police from the meeting and the subsequent meeting the following evening waa cancelled.
