The trials of the 500+ Standing Rock water protectors arrested over the past several months have begun in Mandan, North Dakota. There is serious concern over the legal crisis that is happening there.
Wisconsin Citizens Media Coop would like to cover the water protectors’ trials, and conduct an in-depth investigation into the cumulative effects of civil and human rights abuses on a group of people dedicated to protecting the water from a catastrophic oil spill.
Please help us raise $2,000 so we can send WCMC reporters to cover the stories of the many water protectors who are facing a hostile and chaotic legal environment. We are seeking funds for travel, lodging and food expenses to be there from January 10 – January 23, 2017.
WCMC’s own Rebecca Kemble was arrested on October 10, 2016 as she was serving as a volunteer legal observer for the National Lawyers Guild. Like Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman and independent filmmaker Deia Schlosberg, Kemble was targeted for her camera and now faces four trumped up charges—resisting arrest, destruction of evidence, engaging in a riot and criminal trespass. She faces a possible two years in jail and severe fines. Her trial is scheduled for January 12, 2017.
