Integrity: The Child Scott Walker Left Behind

[Editor’s note: What follows is one woman’s account of the Scott Walker she knew at Marquette University. To the extent possible we have verified its accuracy, including the accuracy of details not printed here in order to protect the identities of the people involved. All of the elements are consistent: the principals were at Marquette University when the incidents recounted here allegedly happened, and “Ruth” did have a baby shortly thereafter.]

“First off, let me be clear, set the stage here … I’ve had a high level of integrity all the way back to my early days as a kid when I earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and have shown that during my time in the State Assembly, as the County Executive, and now as the Governor of the State of Wisconsin. I will continue to have high integrity long after I’m in this position and long after this whole process is complete.” –Scott Walker

_______________________________________________________

Bernadette Gillick was a college freshman in 1988 when she first met Scott Walker. It was spring semester, and she had just transferred to Marquette University. She was assigned a room in O’Donnell Hall (then a women’s dormitory), which she shared with her new roommate, Ruth (not her real name). Ruth was dating Scott Walker, who was 20 at the time, and, according to Bernadette, Ruth was deeply in love with him.

Midway through that spring semester, Bernadette alleges, Ruth found out she was pregnant. She informed her boyfriend, Scott, and initially he was supportive. Yet that support changed to callous indifference for his girlfriend’s predicament after Scott informed his parents of the pregnancy.

Bernadette reports that at this point Scott began denying that he was the father of the baby, and when Ruth said she was considering an abortion, he claimed he didn’t care, as he wasn’t the father anyway.

Bernadette remembers being present when Ruth was dealing with the wrath of Scott’s mother, who allegedly admonished Ruth for trying to “ruin [her son’s] reputation.”

“I supported her [Ruth] as he [Scott] went from encouraging her to get an abortion, to telling me it was in my best interest to keep my mouth shut, to denying that he was the father and having his own mother call her and tell her to stop erroneously accusing her son of paternity,” Bernadette recounts.

It was a “horrible time” for her friend. “Her life was changed tremendously and she took the high road in the face of incredible adversarial conditions. Imagine her being 18 years old and pregnant, walking around Marquette’s Jesuit Catholic campus with her boyfriend denying he was the father,” says Bernadette.

All this was taking place while Walker was running for student body president and serving as chair of the Marquette chapter of Students for Life.

According to Bernadette, Walker finally had to concede after the birth and paternity test, but “he hid everything he could and had little to do with the child.”

After consulting with her family, Ruth decided against an abortion. Bernadette was with Ruth in the hospital for the birth of her child later that year (and says Walker was not present), and later stood up as a bridesmaid in Ruth’s 1992 marriage to another man.

Why did Bernadette come forward with this story?

Dr. Bernadette Gillick is now a highly esteemed college professor and researcher at the Gillick Pediatric Research Lab at the University of Minnesota, specializing in brain plasticity and neurorehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy. Through her attorney, Mike Fargione, she issued a statement: “It is rare that you will ever hear from me on issues of politics… but I’m asking you to consider what I have to share …”

Bernadette recounts how, in the run up to the 2012 Wisconsin recall election, she watched a televised debate between Scott Walker and Tom Barrett. As Walker talked about his “lifelong integrity” her anger grew. This was a man who had abandoned his pregnant young girlfriend — completely turned his back on her at the most fragile point in her life. She notes his “now-convenient ‘pro-life’ proclamations” after burying his past “indiscretion.”

Despite repeated attempts to contact Walker and his campaign staff for comments, only one person responded to our request. Former campaign staffer Luke Fuller refused to comment, saying he no longer works for the Walker campaign and cannot reveal the source of his current employment.

I wonder how Walker feels about cutting so much aid to Planned Parenthood? I mean, they provide contraception to tons of college aged kids, just to prevent a situation like this.

In his years at Marquette University, Walker first developed an approach to furthering his aims that became the guiding principle of his entire political career and which he vigorously applied in the case of his relationship with this unfortunate young woman. We have seen it in full flower since he became Governor.

It has been dubbed “Obstinance Only”.

this is the tiniest tip of the iceberg of reasons to vote out Walker.

This is a much bigger reason:

“I stand by my reporting 100 percent,” Shuster said in the conference call. “It’s clear to me that he is, in fact, a target in a federal investigation.”

For people that are behind Scott Walker this will go completely over their heads as made up stories. This isn’t the 1st time I’ve heard this about him. I still cannot believe that people think he is the almighty saint. It shows through this story what kind of man this is. I understand sometimes people do stupid things when you’re young but most people own up to them. Not Scott Walker. Lying is just apart of his life. These things are documented from college. At least his running for a position as student body president so I just don’t understand why people believe him over & over. Shame on him for what he did to that young girl but how lucky are they to have gotten out from under him.

    To Mary,
How exactly is the DPW left of Castro? Say what you will about this story — I’m skeptical myself, though WCMC generally does great reporting — but this isn’t Tom Barrett making these claims. Nor is it the state party.

Furthermore, the claims are apolitical, have nothing to do with which direction on the political spectrum Walker or Barrett are on (in other words, stating that Walker had a love child may help Democrats politically, but it doesn’t DEFINE their political point of view).

I suggest that if you have any criticisms of stories like these, you leave such inflammatory rhetoric out of it. This story has no bearing on how far to the left any member of the DPW has gone. It’d be like me calling Mitt Romney a fascist if he were to suggest Barack Obama was not born an American (this hasn’t happened, but go with the example). Such an assertion has no politicalness to it whatsover.

The issue is that Scott Walker violates state and federal laws, he lies to people and he uses people. Check this out:

“I stand by my reporting 100 percent,” Shuster said in the conference call. “It’s clear to me that he is, in fact, a target in a federal investigation.”

    wial June 2, 2012 at 10:44 pm #

Another Mary, you said “more for the state”. You meant to say “more *to* the state”. Understand the difference? Wisconsin worked for years to build up an incredible civil service system that was the envy of the nation, and the inspiration for the EPA. Walker is attempting to destroy all that, because he is an incredibly stupid, evil man, and it doesn’t surprise me in the least he’s also incapable of taking responsibility for the life of a child. Indeed that might be why he took down the painting of children in the governor’s mansion — the flickerings of a guilty conscience. Or maybe Tonette didn’t want to be reminded of how slimy the man is she married.

As for fair and square, I suggest you look up “Citizens United” to see what your ilk has done to “fair and square” in this country. You are ENEMIES of America and I can only pray the good lord has mercy on your souls.

Walker is a toady and a patsy of interests that intend to gut Wisconsin of its natural resources and leave it gasping on a rock to die. You want to help that? What is wrong with you??

Mary what if it is true doesn’t this reflect a total lack of character and integrity. It sounds pretty credible to me. It seems to me that this is an example of someone who knows Scott Walker and felt compelled to speak out as he is quite literally holding himself up as a boy scout. I don’t understand how you can make a statement saying the Democratic party is as left as Fidel Castro when in fact the Democratic party is much closer politically to a Reagan Republican and the policies that they have gone alone with stripping the protections to our people provided by the New Deal and the Great Society policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Lyndon B. Johnson. In order to be to the left of Fidel Castro I would think that policies would need to be to the left of the American policies that have governed our nation for the past 70 years. Tom Barrett and Mahlon Mitchell deserve to win the recall election because they will bring integrity back to our government and pass legislation lawfully with the proper notice given to the people so the people have the opportunity to provide feedback. They will not take legislation written by corporations in DC and voted on outside of WI with corporate representatives like the American Legislative Exchange Council as our current Republican legislators and governor are doing. These bills are not written for the people of Wisconsin they are written for corporations who want to do business in our
State without any regard for our citizens. I would encourage you to read some of the model legislation on the ALECExposed.com website and compare them to the bills being passed through in our legislature. This legislation can be found on the legislatures website at legis.wisconsin.gov/

Can you really say with a straight face, after this story shows up a few days before the election that electing Tom Barrette will bring integrity to the democrat party? The party whose seven members deserted their post during the protests in Madison instead of doing the job they were elected to do? I’m sorry, you sound like a person with no creadibility.

Your exact question was answered right there in the article if you had bothered to actually read it:

Over the phone, Bernadette recounted how she watched a recent televised debate between Scott Walker and Tom Barrett. As he talked about his “lifelong integrity” her anger grew. This was a man who had abandoned his pregnant young girlfriend — completely turned his back on her at the most fragile point in her life. She notes his “now-convenient ‘pro-life’ proclamations” after burying his past “indiscretion.” Says Bernadette, “I cannot listen to his lies anymore … I cannot dream of how anyone would support such an evil man. Once a man shows that he has no soul, there is nothing more.”

Kathy, if “Ruth” had gotten out from under him, she wouldn’t have had the kid…or on top of him…or however she liked it. Many quetions are raised from this, such as why is this coming out now? “Ruth” or her friends had 14 years to expose Walker. It’s no secret that Walker is Pro-Life and he has held many public offices in the past. Why is now the correct time? Did “Ruth” have only one friend that she told Walker was the kid’s father? I would think, with a name like Walker’s, somebody many people could back up the story, yet nobody has come forward with it. This story would not even fly with Maury Povich.

This is not a do over this is a recall and according to the Wisconsin State Constitution the people do get to recall if they feel that the Governor is so bad that 1/4 of those who voted in the last election are willing to sign recall petitions, you have enough people willing to put in the energy & money to get the job done in an almost impossible time frame, which we did. The bar for recall is extremely high and it is a monumental task, I know I have spent countless hours devoted to these activities. This was not taken on lightly, it is not frivolous. We also managed to recall a couple of Senators last summer and now have 4 more who are up for recall. Perhaps you and all of those who support Walker should open your eyes your family, friends, neighbors and fellow citizens are trying to get a message to you. This Governor does not care about Wisconsin he is beholden to Corporate interests that wish to privatize and loot our State. Governor Scott Walker was the county executive in Milwaukee county for 10 years and is largely responsible for the miserable conditions in Milwaukee. This is not just about unions.

Mary is so angry because she knows that this could very well be true, whether it actually is or not. After meeting people who grew up with Walker that say he is so different today (for the worse) than when he was in Delavan schools and others who helped his family out when things weren’t going so well, this doesn’t surprise me at all. Sometimes I really feel sorry for him, but not enough to allow him to be the decider on which way Wisconsin goes. We need to forcibly remove the shovel from his hands and crawl out of the hole he’s dug for us.

@ Daniel Bice – Yeah, I just checked CCAP and couldn’t find anything either.

I wonder is she’s being paid to deny it ? I wouldn’t put it past Walker, considering his other shady practices.

You should try to meet the kid and offer them a soda (then make sure to retrieve the bottle) Too bad we couldn’t get a DNA test back by Tuesday yet. 😉

Thanks for looking into this. I sorta wish it were true, but it would be hard to prove w/o cooperation.

    Keep up the good work.

How about we wait see how this plays out? I don’t get why repubs are so impatient.

Repubs are so impatient? “How about we wait and see how this plays out?” Are you serious? Shouldn’t you be asking these questions to those responsible for this irresponsible story published before they have any actual evidence aside from third-hand rumors?
Obviously it’s partisan politics before integrity around here.

I agree. Wo cares if he fixed the huge deficit in the budget and created 20,000 jobs, all I care about is whether he had sex in college or not.

You don’t find it suspicious fr something like his coming out 2 days before the election? Sorry, it reeks of obvious desperation.

CCAP is not a full and complete system. I am an attorney. First, it is administered county by county and different counties put up different amounts of information. SECOND, paternity cases are NOT put online unless there is an associated filing for child support. if it is a simple paternity file and child support doesn’t go into arrears, the file is NOT available online. It also may not be available at the courthouse. I’m not sure on that one and am checking in to it.

Woman Denies Walker Fathered Baby – JSO Reporter Daniel Bice

The story that Scott Walker abandoned his pregnant girlfriend in college (dKos diary link) failed the first test of verification by a professional reporter. Daniel Bice, the “Watchdog” reporter of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Online interviewed the anonymous woman who had the baby, but she adamantly denied that Scott Walker was the father according to a comment by Daniel Bice to the linked story.

    Daniel BiceJune 3, 2012 at 3:15 amReply
I am getting a lot of emails because of this post. Two things: (1) I tracked down and talked to Dr. Gillick’s freshman-year roommate at MU yesterday, and she adamantly denies that Walker is the father of her child. Yes, she got pregnant as a first-year student, but she believes Dr. Gillick is mixing up stories; and (2) I Can Read CCAP has taken a family court suit involving Scott Alan Walker and mixed it up with the governor, Scott Kevin Walker.

We need to be careful with stories like this that haven’t been verified. Yes, someone could be impersonating Daniel Bice, but the comment rings true to me. Yes, the woman who had the baby could be covering up for some undisclosed reason, but we have zero evidence of that. Note, the official CCAP family court records that Daniel Bice and others accessed do not indicate that governor Scott Walker was the father.

This story is absolutely 100% false. I have ALWAYS acted with integrity. (have I mentioned that I was an Eagle scout, yet?)

I doubt if this is the Scott Walker in question. However, regardless of if you are or aren’t, Governor Scott Walker may have been an Eagle Scout, but after that while attending Marquette University you turned into a plagerist. Thus the reason you didn’t graduate Marquette University. While the University gave you the option of taking over a class you cheated in, you refused to do so. This in itself is not the worst thing a person can do, but it says a lot about Scott Walker’s character. A tiger doesn’t change it’s stripes.

AND the son of a minister! We all know that all men of the cloth are men of God! So, Scott, does that mean you are related to God? 😉

Sure Mary. The Dems are sooo far left. What a joke. So your solution is to support the party that believes in authoritarianism.and fascism? Great thinking. Hitler broke up the unions too. Nice company you keep.

Who cares? This happened well before he was in the political spectrum. I’m sorry, but this story seems a desperate attempt to vilify Walker, and it will probably blow up in your face.

Perhaps someone should simply contact the real Bice and verify the validity of his comment here. Until then, we don’t really know what’s happening.

This needs to be brought out. Barrett should ask Walker about it publicly. If this woman (Gillick) who made up this story is lying or has blabbed about something she doesn’t know is true, she should lose her job. It sounds to me like she is pushing a political vendetta and is either confused and has identified a different Scott Walker as the father of her friend’s baby or she is simply lying. Either way, if I was “Ruth,” I’d be pissed with my “friend” for putting my story in the public eye.

The woman reporting this incident lives in MINNESOTA! What is her interest in supporting Barrett (note correct spelling) in his race for governor of WISCONSIN? Girl, get a clue!

Put another way, Gillick is wrong no matter what. If she is telling the truth, then she shows herself as a hypocrite, condemning sex before marriage between consenting adults. She’s also not a very good friend, telling “Ruth’s” story and blithely ignoring “Ruth’s” right to privacy, not to mention the child. If Gillick is lying, she’s showing that she is a completely untrustworthy person, just making up a story that could be very damaging to her college room-mate and “friend,” just to harm someone whose politics she disagrees with. Unless the “Ruth” doesn’t exist, then she just looks like a crazy-@$$ liberal. So, yeah, this story needs to be hashed out in the media, in the public eye right now.
