Integrity: The Child Scott Walker Left Behind

[Editor’s note: What follows is one woman’s account of the Scott Walker she knew at Marquette University. To the extent possible we have verified its accuracy, including the accuracy of details not printed here in order to protect the identities of the people involved. All of the elements are consistent: the principals were at Marquette University when the incidents recounted here allegedly happened, and “Ruth” did have a baby shortly thereafter.]

“First off, let me be clear, set the stage here … I’ve had a high level of integrity all the way back to my early days as a kid when I earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and have shown that during my time in the State Assembly, as the County Executive, and now as the Governor of the State of Wisconsin. I will continue to have high integrity long after I’m in this position and long after this whole process is complete.” –Scott Walker

_______________________________________________________

Bernadette Gillick was a college freshman in 1988 when she first met Scott Walker. It was spring semester, and she had just transferred to Marquette University. She was assigned a room in O’Donnell Hall (then a women’s dormitory), which she shared with her new roommate, Ruth (not her real name). Ruth was dating Scott Walker, who was 20 at the time, and, according to Bernadette, Ruth was deeply in love with him.

Midway through that spring semester, Bernadette alleges, Ruth found out she was pregnant. She informed her boyfriend, Scott, and initially he was supportive. Yet that support changed to callous indifference for his girlfriend’s predicament after Scott informed his parents of the pregnancy.

Bernadette reports that at this point Scott began denying that he was the father of the baby, and when Ruth said she was considering an abortion, he claimed he didn’t care, as he wasn’t the father anyway.

Bernadette remembers being present when Ruth was dealing with the wrath of Scott’s mother, who allegedly admonished Ruth for trying to “ruin [her son’s] reputation.”

“I supported her [Ruth] as he [Scott] went from encouraging her to get an abortion, to telling me it was in my best interest to keep my mouth shut, to denying that he was the father and having his own mother call her and tell her to stop erroneously accusing her son of paternity,” Bernadette recounts.

It was a “horrible time” for her friend. “Her life was changed tremendously and she took the high road in the face of incredible adversarial conditions. Imagine her being 18 years old and pregnant, walking around Marquette’s Jesuit Catholic campus with her boyfriend denying he was the father,” says Bernadette.

All this was taking place while Walker was running for student body president and serving as chair of the Marquette chapter of Students for Life.

According to Bernadette, Walker finally had to concede after the birth and paternity test, but “he hid everything he could and had little to do with the child.”

After consulting with her family, Ruth decided against an abortion. Bernadette was with Ruth in the hospital for the birth of her child later that year (and says Walker was not present), and later stood up as a bridesmaid in Ruth’s 1992 marriage to another man.

Why did Bernadette come forward with this story?

Dr. Bernadette Gillick is now a highly esteemed college professor and researcher at the Gillick Pediatric Research Lab at the University of Minnesota, specializing in brain plasticity and neurorehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy. Through her attorney, Mike Fargione, she issued a statement: “It is rare that you will ever hear from me on issues of politics… but I’m asking you to consider what I have to share …”

Bernadette recounts how, in the run up to the 2012 Wisconsin recall election, she watched a televised debate between Scott Walker and Tom Barrett. As Walker talked about his “lifelong integrity” her anger grew. This was a man who had abandoned his pregnant young girlfriend — completely turned his back on her at the most fragile point in her life. She notes his “now-convenient ‘pro-life’ proclamations” after burying his past “indiscretion.”

Despite repeated attempts to contact Walker and his campaign staff for comments, only one person responded to our request. Former campaign staffer Luke Fuller refused to comment, saying he no longer works for the Walker campaign and cannot reveal the source of his current employment.

Are you the same Dan Bice who is the reporter with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, who accessed paternity records that say that another Walker is the father? Is so, would you please explain why you think Gov. Walker should make a statement. Is there some doubt to what you found?

Far be it for me to tell the WCMC what articles to run. I do feel however that the article regarding an alleged child by Walker at Marquette is scurrilousness and not well researched. It is third hand hearsay.

In fact, I think it helps Walker by making serious claims of bad conduct with really no evidence presented, and confusing the issue on what is already a huge body of bad behavior by Walker at Marquette that is documented. This is something I would expect from the Walker camp to deflect the more serious and factual issues we have raised.

I would kindly ask two things:

1.) That you immediately remove reference to my name from this piece. I was not asked to be quoted in the article and do not support it.

2.) And that you take down my original “Walker Unfit” article from the WCMC web site. I do not wish to be associated with the publisher’s of this recent piece.

    Regards,
    Dr. Glen barry

Since this badly researched article is posted here on WCMC, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that this isn’t being put out by the Walker camp. It’s pretty obvious that Democrats are already trying to run from this when they realized that their timing was a little too early before the recall vote. They should have waited until tomorrow, Monday, to throw this bomb.

Thanks for the entertainment people. You dems are so funny when you realize you’re losing on the issues and start to panic. You resort to tactics like this particular third-hand rumor which even the sleaziest tabloid would be embarrassed to publish. Guess it just proves the old adage “desperate times call for desperate measures.”

It would appear story is true and about _A_ Scott Walker … Just not the one who is Governor of Wisconsin… I’m Charlie, I’m a DEMOCRAT, and I approve of this post

And all you so-called conservative spiting venom are anything BUT.
Man and Woman Up and join me in stepping away from hateful politics and let’s get this country back on track

And those of you who wanna wear the Democrat hat. Please try and promote sensible behavior online. I’m tired of people who aren’t experienced enough to have had to deal with Reagan talking trash like drunken ‘scholars’.

Let’s pull back, run our various races like dignified Americans and demonstrate what this country is really about.

I recognized most of the words you wrote Charlie but you lost me with how you strung them together in those things I can only assume you intended to be sentences. 1. A DNA test would easily “prove THEY DID NOT DO something”

    2. The poster registering as “Dr. Glen Barry” clearly is not the “Dr. Glenn Barry” quoted in the article. You can’t even spell your own name correctly? I could have identified myself as “Dr. Glenn Barry” and posted on this list any crock of baloney I wanted to. Further, most doctors of any kind don’t refer to themselves as “Dr. ____ ______” in writing but as “_____ _________, MD/PhD”, or whatever doctorate they hold.

Is this really the level of conversation one considers to be thoughtful, truthful, or meaningful? Shedding light on a subject?

Not in my book. Everyone making ad hominem arguments just because they don’t like the assertions made, not considering any facts. pfffffft

“If Bernadette’s story is true, Ruth – and eventually their child – were just a few of the people who got in the way of Walker’s quest for power.”

Well, its not true. So apparently Scott Walker, the one now Governor, has plenty of integrity. Far more than the editor who decided to publish this rubbish and those guillible haters of anyone named Scott Walker that want the story to be true.

By the way, the first clue that this story is rubbish: “Dr. Bernadette Gillick is now a college professor at a major Midwestern university.” What? The university couldn’t be named, as if no one could use the internet to find Dr. Gillick? This is the depth of research for this article by the author, a non member of the co-op.

The article has to have been a setup by the Walker forces to divert attention from his election fraud and being kicked out of Marquette University. I encourage WCMC to retract this article and remove it from the web immediately. It is third hand hearsay and distracts from the hundreds of proven ethical allegations against Scott Walker. If it is true, let it come out when ready fully and fairly.

It seems unlikely that a tenured faculty member at a large University would go on record with such story, knowing that it was false. She could lose her tenured status, hardly a risk she would be likely to take.

It also seems unlikely that she would be confused about the identity of the Scott Walker in question.

She didn’t simply read Walker’s name. The fact that she saw him and spoke to him frequently at Marquette means that she was able to clearly recognize him, and identifying him as the Scott Walker who behaved with so little integrity, knew that it was important to inform the public of his true nature.

    • Unknown's avatar
      Chris June 3, 2012 at 12:52 pm #

And you forgot to add that it makes reasonable and perfect sense that this intelligent, stalwart citizen, for decades, apparently didn’t think that “it was important to inform the public of his true nature” until she finally saw the light just 48 hours before this recall election. Completely plausible. (And your name is “A Thinking Person”? You’re just pulling our chain right?)

This is definitely a point to remember. It’s seriously doubtful, unless its a grave error, that a University Tenured Professor would make this story up out of the blue. Also, besides the Daily Kos story casting doubt on the Professor’s account of events 20 plus years ago….other true media resource (i.e.-a newspaper online or print in Wisconsin) else has came up denying this story, as of yet.

In the end, like in the Edward’s case, until a DNA test is done, both sides will play a game of denials and confirmations. It’s also equality unlikely that Gov. Walker will ever agree to a DNA test. So, individuals should keep a fair mind judgement on this story, remember its’ out there and vote whatever way their mind was leaning prior to this (or the Daily Kos) article publishing.

Let’s just hope more individuals agree, than disagree, that Scott Walker should be removed from Wisconsin’s Governorship position by recalling him out of office.

    Chris,

I think that it precisely when an intelligent person would do this–when it would have the most effect on preventing an unscrupulous person from continuing to hold office.

Remember, Chris–she did use her name, so it’s a rather simple matter to find out whether it is her or otherwise.

Try reading a bit more slowly next time, it will help with the larger words and more challenging concepts.

“I think that it precisely when an intelligent person would do this–when it would have the most effect on preventing an unscrupulous person from continuing to hold office.”

Uhhh, didn’t Walker run for office a couple of years ago? So either Gillick was o.k. with such an unscrupulous person holding office then but not now, or somehow this spectacularly intelligent intellectual somehow didn’t notice that election a couple of years ago.

Let me help you “Dr. Barry”, since you seem to be caught in a bit of cognition unfit for practice.

Dr. Gillick has used her own name.

She attended Marquette at the same time as Walker.

She is an accomplished doctor and professor, extremely well-published, who can only place herself at risk if the story is false. Not if it is true.

She saw Walker constantly during her undergraduate career.

Perhaps you should get a thorough examination before you attempt to write anything else that you then somehow feel the sudden impulse to withdraw.

  26. Unknown's avatar
Dr. Glen Barry June 3, 2012 at 1:07 pm #

The sleazy thing about the attack whether true (unlikely) or not is that it happens just days before the election so don’t really have time to research the possibility that this is truly the writing of Dr. Gillick, at which point it would still remain 2nd hand hearsay. The lead in by WCMC is so disingenuous, we’ve verified the accuracy to the extent possible but have not been able to independently confirm it. You mean a rumor? Geez guys, this feeds right into Walker being able to dismiss and smear together all criticism of his earlier days. Don’t let him get away with it – I am confident this article is a plant. But by all means continue to check allegations in the proper manner.

Let me help you, Chris, with what thinking is. And evidence.

    1) You cite no evidence that she is a partisan Democrat–or indeed, any evidence of affiliation whatsoever. Evidence, Chris.

    2) You speak of “pad(ding) her resume”. Those are called publications. On the record, Chris–you can look them up in PubMed. Evidence, Chris.

    3) You claim that her statement issues from the “Dem rumor mill”, but, again, provide no connection of her statement to any Democratic organization, group, or affiliate. Again, Evidence, Chris.

Are you familiar with the term oxymoron? Or just, more likely, the second syllable of the word?

    Reading: It’s fundamental!

    • Unknown's avatar
      Chris June 3, 2012 at 1:24 pm #

Thanks for your help. I’ll try to return the favor, but I’m seriously beginning to doubt anyone can do that…

      1) If you read more carefully you’ll notice I never said Gillick was a partisan Democrat. The RUMOR supposedly coming from her is being used by partisan dems. I sincerely doubt Gillick will confirm any of this.

      2) The process of piling up a bunch of achievements on your resume can be called “padding”. I’m not calling those any of those achievements false. I’m simply referring to your listing a bunch of those genuine (I’ll take your word for them) as a padding process. Don’t be so defensive where you don’t need to be.

      3) As for evidence to where these rumors are coming from, take a look at this site we’re writing on. Hello? Can you say partisan hack site? Your posting on the evidence.

And I won’t finish by attacking you personally in demeaning terms. Conservatives generally rely on facts to communicate and don’t need the personal derision to make a point.

    Glen,

Several days is of course, plenty of time, since:

    1) She gives her own name;

    2) She gives the name of her attorney.

It takes mere minutes to verify the statement as coming from Gillick, as, fortunately, we are not in the pre-telegraph days. And I’m sure that people are attempting to do so, from both sides, as we speak.

  30. Unknown's avatar
    A Person Thinking June 3, 2012 at 1:19 pm #

It’s rather simple, Chris, but let me help—you.

Dr. Gillick makes it clear that she was reluctant to come forward with this information.

That she does not typically involve herself in politics.

It is only when, in the face of a recall, he put himself forward for redemption on the basis of his ethics, that Gillick states that she reluctantly decided it was necessary to put this information forward.

The fact that she did this is completely understandable, plausible, and utterly human.

Hooked on Phonics might be a good place to start, Chris.

This is an article by WCMC’s ———, of a third person account based on an interview (or is it just the email) of a roommate, of what allegedly happened between another woman who can’t be found, and Scott Walker. This is not community media, it is precisely what the bad guys do not, trash people on hearsay – not #wiunion. Shame at the timing and lack of documentation in making such serious accusations. Let it be fully examined fairly but not allowed to pollute this election further. We’re the good guys! Perhaps I’ll be proven wrong, and I would be glad to be, as this is Darth Walker after all… I just don’t like the fact-lite attack. And if you have the proof, get it out there now because otherwise this looks very amateurish and not truthful.

And Watergate was initially a series of third person interviews of people who knew people who they had observed in illegal activities.

It does need more research, but there is no reason why the official press should be the only ones trusted with doing it. We did not make this up, nor did we time it to the election. We received a detailed story from a credible source. If we chose not to publish it, in essence we would be saying that the public cannot be trusted with it. That is what the “professional” press has chosen to do. We are not the professional press. After a very long day of extensive research (far more extensive than our story reveals) we chose to publish the story.

If I see a scintilla of collaborating evidence I can certainly attest that this is well within Walker’s character. But we have agreed that it be researched thoroughly and information gotten out there if appropriate and fair.

“If I see a scintilla of collaborating evidence”

Finally, someone has the sanity to point out that there isn’t even a scintilla of collaborating evidence concerning this rumor. Thank you.

Indeed–and the above, of course, is both appropriate in raising the issue of Walker’s unethical behavior, and utterly fair to an electorate that needs to be aware of such information, particularly in the case of a recall.

Are you guys really serious? Because he ruffled a few feathers in college 20 years ago you want to now stop this guy from saving Union jobs while saving money and creating and Wisconsin jobs and demonstrably showing he is putting the Wisconsin economy back on the road to recovery? What is wrong with you? “Let’s get rid of this guy before he can help Wisconsin save even more jobs while saving even more money.”
You partisan dems are really willing to shoot yourselves in the foot just to win an election? You’re just dang lucky you’ve still got enough clear-eyed people who it looks like are going to save you from yourselves. You’re welcome.

I also am disturbed that the author of the article is not cited, and was just censored in my post above. And that this is very likely the very same person or an associate of “A Person Thinking”. This story is being released in a manner that is not transparent or ethical. If you have something important to say, sign your name. And don’t quote others you haven’t spoken with or gotten permission from to reference. I’m pissed.

The case is interesting–Walker, a putative pro-life candidate, schemes to have a young co-ed have her child aborted in order to have his own political stakes made safe. It’s fascinating that a person might do this, given his own past as a political charlatan.

This story is false on its face. It has absolutely not a shred of verification. The story says “She says Walker eventually had to concede that he was the father, after the birth and paternity test.”

Think about it: a court-ordered paternity test will be a public record, findable on CCAP. Look and you will not find it. A voluntary paternity test? Gimme a break. Who’d do that when denying paternity?

I read this and immediate thought that it was a total crock, loaded with irrelevant details thrown in to give a sense of verisimilitude. I expect this will turn out to be a right-wing troll, perfectly-designed to get the anti-Walker folks to jump on it … and look silly.

You are talking about a case from the 80’s. NOT ALL RECORDS ARE ONLINE! I’ve been doing genealogy research, and I know from my own research that not finding it on CCAP doesn’t mean its not there! If its not online, you need to take your happy butt to the courthouse for a manual record search…GASP! What a concept!

The John Ensign and Harold Carswell Scandals, to name just two of many, began with one person speaking out.

As was noted above via attorney, CCAP is not a full and complete system. I am an attorney. First, it is administered county by county and different counties put up different amounts of information. SECOND, paternity cases are NOT put online unless there is an associated filing for child support. if it is a simple paternity file and child support doesn’t go into arrears, the file is NOT available online. It also may not be available at the courthouse.

      “I am an attorney.”

First you were a computer science teacher who can’t work a keyboard and now you’re an attorney? If I should bring up the subject of elephants, are you going to be a zoo keeper too? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just curious. ; )

Do you really think a college professor would risk her career with a false allegation, especially one which can be swiftly disproved with a paternity test? Personally, I find that unlikely.

      A CheeseHead June 3, 2012 at 1:47 pm #

If you actually think Walker will, if actually guilty, submit to a paternity test, then you’ve got another thing to think “unlikely”.

Exactly. Which is why no one should believe any of this.
None of this is verified one way or the other at this point. This story doesn’t even have a byline. Which I understand completely. Who would want to take the fall for this complete hoax of a story?

I heard from a guy who he went to college with that Barrett has NOT stopped beating his wife. And this guy is a respected professor so it’s true.

“To the extent possible we have verified its accuracy”

“and so far we have not been able to…verify Bernadette’s account”

So in other words, the “extent possible” was “not at all” but you enjoy the sound of your own pedantic pretence. The facade of integrity.

    Got it.

    Poor Chris.

So, it’s not only reading deficits, but memory.

    Chris, within minutes:

Chris: “If you read more carefully you’ll notice I never said Gillick was a partisan Democrat. The RUMOR supposedly coming from her is being used by partisan dems.
I sincerely doubt Gillick will confirm any of this.

Chris: “So either Gillick was o.k. with such an unscrupulous person holding office then but not now, or somehow this spectacularly intelligent intellectual somehow didn’t notice that election a couple of years ago”

High-Minded Chris (with signs of Senile Dementia): “And I won’t finish by attacking you personally in demeaning terms. Conservatives generally rely on facts to communicate and don’t need the personal derision to make a point.”

Meatheaded Chris (with redundant symptomatology) minutes before: “And your name is “A Thinking Person”? You’re just pulling our chain right? Sorry, but a truly thinking man needs actual “evidence.” Obviously, partisan dems don’t.

There are new medications that help with both intellectual and memory deficits. Cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne, Cognex) and memantine (Namenda) may help with your cognitive symptoms, memory loss, confusion, and problems with thinking and reasoning.

Hmmm. Sounds like you’ve had some substantial personal experience in this area. LOL. Either that or I guess we’ll have to add pharmacist to your list of career identities. : )

Actually, Chris, I was quoting the above. Again, try to read a bit more carefully. And work on that contradiction problem, my oxymoronic as well as latter-syllabic child.

Try to picture the concept before you write it. It will help you remember what your last position was.

If this report turns out to be false, then the analysis will begin.
This is either a Segrettian dirty trick, or a Rovian innouculation.
Could this report be a Rovian innoculation if it is true?
