Integrity: The Child Scott Walker Left Behind

[Editor’s note: What follows is one woman’s account of the Scott Walker she knew at Marquette University. To the extent possible we have verified its accuracy, including the accuracy of details not printed here in order to protect the identities of the people involved. All of the elements are consistent: the principals were at Marquette University when the incidents recounted here allegedly happened, and “Ruth” did have a baby shortly thereafter.]

“First off, let me be clear, set the stage here … I’ve had a high level of integrity all the way back to my early days as a kid when I earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and have shown that during my time in the State Assembly, as the County Executive, and now as the Governor of the State of Wisconsin. I will continue to have high integrity long after I’m in this position and long after this whole process is complete.” –Scott Walker

_______________________________________________________

Bernadette Gillick was a college freshman in 1988 when she first met Scott Walker. It was spring semester, and she had just transferred to Marquette University. She was assigned a room in O’Donnell Hall (then a women’s dormitory), which she shared with her new roommate, Ruth (not her real name). Ruth was dating Scott Walker, who was 20 at the time, and, according to Bernadette, Ruth was deeply in love with him.

Midway through that spring semester, Bernadette alleges, Ruth found out she was pregnant. She informed her boyfriend, Scott, and initially he was supportive. Yet that support changed to callous indifference for his girlfriend’s predicament after Scott informed his parents of the pregnancy.

Bernadette reports that at this point Scott began denying that he was the father of the baby, and when Ruth said she was considering an abortion, he claimed he didn’t care, as he wasn’t the father anyway.

Bernadette remembers being present when Ruth was dealing with the wrath of Scott’s mother, who allegedly admonished Ruth for trying to “ruin [her son’s] reputation.”

“I supported her [Ruth] as he [Scott] went from encouraging her to get an abortion, to telling me it was in my best interest to keep my mouth shut, to denying that he was the father and having his own mother call her and tell her to stop erroneously accusing her son of paternity,” Bernadette recounts.

It was a “horrible time” for her friend. “Her life was changed tremendously and she took the high road in the face of incredible adversarial conditions. Imagine her being 18 years old and pregnant, walking around Marquette’s Jesuit Catholic campus with her boyfriend denying he was the father,” says Bernadette.

All this was taking place while Walker was running for student body president and serving as chair of the Marquette chapter of Students for Life.

According to Bernadette, Walker finally had to concede after the birth and paternity test, but “he hid everything he could and had little to do with the child.”

After consulting with her family, Ruth decided against an abortion. Bernadette was with Ruth in the hospital for the birth of her child later that year (and says Walker was not present), and later stood up as a bridesmaid in Ruth’s 1992 marriage to another man.

Why did Bernadette come forward with this story?

Dr. Bernadette Gillick is now a highly esteemed college professor and researcher at the Gillick Pediatric Research Lab at the University of Minnesota, specializing in brain plasticity and neurorehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy. Through her attorney, Mike Fargione, she issued a statement: “It is rare that you will ever hear from me on issues of politics… but I’m asking you to consider what I have to share …”

Bernadette recounts how, in the run up to the 2012 Wisconsin recall election, she watched a televised debate between Scott Walker and Tom Barrett. As Walker talked about his “lifelong integrity” her anger grew. This was a man who had abandoned his pregnant young girlfriend — completely turned his back on her at the most fragile point in her life. She notes his “now-convenient ‘pro-life’ proclamations” after burying his past “indiscretion.”

Despite repeated attempts to contact Walker and his campaign staff for comments, only one person responded to our request. Former campaign staffer Luke Fuller refused to comment, saying he no longer works for the Walker campaign and cannot reveal the source of his current employment.

While I vociferously deny any relation to you, I do agree that your child would necessarily possess those gene pool traits.
(Sorry, but you’ve got to stop throwing these hanging curve balls over the middle of the plate.) ; )

    Chris,

Indeed. And you are reminding me of some of the most serious cases.

Why not consider a vacation while the facts on the Walker pregnancy story work themselves out?

You can schedule in small bits of time for remedial work.

    Start with:

Basic consistency (e.g. If I claim one fact, I shouldn’t immediately contradict it).

    Essentials of the English Language

    Understanding Factual Evidence.

Then, if you find these too difficult, you can look into treatments recommended above.

It’s better than straining yourself with these difficult concepts. and will allow those who can handle them to take the responsibility of actual thought off of your poor shoulders.

Actually, I was using child in a sense you would find difficult to understand–the literary one.

Amusingly, I can see that you were once again distracted by your vaunted, high-minded use of Conservative principles.

It seems to be a tic.

So, now, we must add Tourettes to the list.

This is a reasonable question Jered. I think not.

However, even self-interest would argue against her coming forward with such a statement, given that it would put her own career seriously at risk.

There should be further stories on the Walker pregnancy issue over the course of the day.

I’m sure that enterprising journalists at POLITICO, NYT, etc. will pick up on it soon enough. It’s a terrific story.

Faced with a dearth of evidence, I go with Occam’s Razor – I find it easier to think a college professor wouldn’t risk her career, than that she would.

Not much to go on, granted. But most people can be counted on to look out for themselves; I add to that feeling my suspicion as to why the original links to the story are starting to show up broken.

  8. Unknown's avatar
    BuddRangzehn June 3, 2012 at 2:21 pm #

Shamelessness on either side doesn’t really have bearing, in the end, on whether or not the story is accurage.

Electoral malfeasance happens on both sides, as history well shows.

Bud–I tend to agree that Occam’s Razor applies here.

I wouldn’t blame any woman for denying that she carried Walker’s child. Imagine being that poor child and finding out. I do trust Bernadette, as she has a lot to lose and nothing to gain. If you are the real Dr. Glen Barry, I want to ask you, how is her story any different than yours?

If I never knew a candidate, anywhere in the nation, and I only voted, based solely on what I read in comments sections, I would NEVER vote Republican.

All over the internet, it’s always the same.

I believe the doctor. Walker has that “liar’s glaze” in his eyes. Note how his eyebrows go up so high on his forehead when he’s defending his lies. It’s a defensive posture that signifies dishonesty.

Badger voters deserve to get answers from Governor Walker about a lot of things. This is just one in a pile. What about the secret email system? What about all his lieutenants and other employees who have been charged with crimes? What about making up his own jobs figures? Why was he kicked out of Marquette? How did his girlfriend in college get pregnant?

    Geeewhilickers!

Let’s get some answers, Governor Walker!

Not true, Joe McCarthy and his witch hunt made Wisconsin look like a bunch of backwoods citizens! Now we have Scott Walker who want women to work for less money than their male co-workers doing the same job (common in Wisconsin in the 50’s & 60’s until unions), wants Wisconsin to be a Right to Work State (getting all the benefits of the unites hard work without paying union dues), favors taking public lands including many of the state owned lands in Northeastern Wisconsin and selling them for pennies on the dollar to his corporate supporters for their own use, and how about his short-sighted plan that has cut school funding-guess he would rather send the money to all his corporate donors for creating jobs, which by the way they have not created-hiring contract workers at less compensation and with no benefits is not creating jobs! As someone who has 40 years in corporate America I have seen all the dirty tricks and plans by CEO’s and Boards of Directors to increase their large salaries and receive stock options. Scott Walker has been in Northeast Wisconsin so many times he could apply for residency!

To truly prove or disprove this, don’t rely on ONLINE court records. They are NOT thorough! Go IN PERSON to the county the mother of the child resided in and request the record at family court. There may be a charge for the search, but you will finally get an answer either way.

Glenn. Here is the Co-op’s response to you. I haven’t even read it. I have nothing to do with any of this and sincerely apologize for exposing your reputation to something like this.

    Dear Dr. Barry:

We have taken down your article from our website, but your quotes will remain intact in the story based on Dr. Gillick’s rememberance, since they were previously published not only on our website, but on countless others as well.

The word “citizens” in Wisconsin Citizens Media Coop has two meanings: Citizen journalists and providing a venue for the voice of the citizens. The second meaning is the spirit in which we published both your article and the one based on Dr. Gillick’s remembrance of Scott Walker. Like you, Dr. Gillick is a credible first person witness to the events that she described. She stands by her story. We helped get your opinion out to over 15,000 readers.

While we understand your desire to distance yourself from our organization and honor that by removing your piece from our website, we do not practice or condone censorship. Removing references to an article you published that is now fully in the public domain would be a serious breach of that principle.

Additionally, part of our decision to print Dr. Gillick’s material was based on the content and theme of your article. We might not have published Dr. Gillick’s piece if there weren’t already allegations of serious breaches of integrity by Walker during this exact same moment in time.

In the end, we appreciate your contributions, and your concerns. We welcome additional collaboration with you in the future if you are so inclined.

    Sincerely,

    Wisconsin Citizens Media Cooperative
    Glen Barry

I provided a first hand account of events I witness personally with substantive supporting documentation. Nothing like an anonymous WCMC author writing of a person, who knew a person, who says of walker. They are not the same!

If you are going to place a quote of mine in an article that I do not support, could you spell my name right at least? I had been providing traffic to you, and had hoped to do more content in the future. So then without my knowledge you link my serious piece to this crap without asking if I minded?

Sure, you can quote anyone you like, some are just professional, decent, nice enough to ask if their colleagues mind – particularly when I have published with you taking a leap of faith, and we are supposedly on the same side. That is the way I am thanked? Forced to be quoted in an article that is libelous and links me to scurrilous rumors that could threaten my hard earned reputation for truthfulness.

Shame on you, acting like a bunch of punks.

I mentioned ealrier that this is the tiniest tip of the iceberg of reasons to vote out Walker.

This is a much bigger reason:

“I stand by my reporting 100 percent,” Shuster said in the conference call. “It’s clear to me that he is, in fact, a target in a federal investigation.”

The feds are gonna lead Walker off in cuffs as governor of Wisconsin. Unless they take too long, then its gonna be the state authorities. Lets make sure that doesnt need to happen.

    RECALL WALKER!

  27. Unknown's avatar
    James Harrington June 3, 2012 at 3:31 pm #

It seems apparent to all that Governor Walker is going down either because of the recall or the state or the federal probes.

The latest polls show Tom Barrett with the momentum and Bill Clinton couldnt have hurt that. So ya got the recall.

Then there are all the probes with Walker aides granted immunity so that they’ll testify. The State probe goes into Walker’s shenanigans in Milwaukee. The federal probe also goes into allegations of abuse while Walker has been governor. Walker has a legal defense fund that he cant spend on anyone but himself or his aides. He has admitted he hasnt spent any of that money on his aides. Yet he added to it for a total of $160k.

Thats a lot of criminal defense attorney hours! So there are the criminal probes.

We need to also focus on the recall of the lt. governor! Walker is burnt toast.

His comment says the woman denied the story. That’s a long way form saying “completely false”. That means it is “she said – she said”.

While the woman in question, “Ruth” denies that Walker is the father of her child, ask yourself this question: If it were you, would you admit it and run the risk of many major media outlets camped on your doorstep? If I were her, I’d probably deny it too, no matter what the truth is and how much I despise SW. And besides, if it is true, who knows what the child may or may not have been told about his biological father – would you want to potentially find out information in this manner? Or, a third possibility: she got paid off at some point in time and is keeping her mouth shut based on a non-disclosure agreement…

    • Unknown's avatar
      Bill Mitchell June 3, 2012 at 5:11 pm #

So what you are saying is, it is impossible, even for the eye-witnesses to deny the truth of this story? It is so true it is truer than the facts?

I am a lifelong Democrat who favors Barrett and opposes Walker. I am also a graduate of UW-Madison’s journalism program. I was employed at three newspapers in an 11-year reporting career, after which I went onto other things.

Your account is libelous, unethical, and one-sided. You published a single-source rumor without verification of the pertinent allegation. You combined it with stories of misdeeds that, at best, were only tangentially related. There’s no rebuttal or reply from Walker or his friends.

Actually, teapugs have gone far left of Fidel. So far left that teapugs are far right, where far left and far right become the same.
    Proof:
    1. Republicans expect employees to “compete” with workers in gulag states, such as the Libertarian Paradise of Communist China.
    2. Republicans think that the heavy hand of government should benefit from collective bargaining representation (Their Sales department, when negotiating government contracts. Their Human Resources department when negotiating with employees.)
    3. Republicans think that corporations need laws that “defund” third party service providers in private contracts (the onerous heavy handed regulations given the Orwellian appellation, “Right to Work”) Why not also allow employees to skip contribution (by work in-kind and paycheck deduction) for health plans, too? Those suck more out of a paycheck than union dues.
    4. Where’s Right To Own? Why should union shop employees be the only citizens to benefit from specially legislated “Rights”? Shareholders should have rights too! Let Corporate Unions such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Association of Manufacturers collect dues from only the shareholders who agree with the politics of those Corporate Unions. Why are members of pension funds forced to subsidize the fatcat lifestyles of Corporate Union thugs?
    5. And customers need “Right to Buy”. Why do Rs expect so many customers to subsidize the fatcat lifestyles of Corporate Union thugs?
