On July 15, over 250 people gathered at the Shell City Water Protector camp to take a stand against Enbridge and their imminent plans to drill under the Shell River at five different locations. Protectors came from all across the country to occupy the easements to protect the river from the continual devastation by a foreign multi-national oil corporation being protected by local Minnesota public law enforcement.
Speakers included Winona La Duke, Honor the Earth; Taysha Martineau, founder of Camp Migizi; Audrey Thayer, the first Native American woman to serve on the Bemidji City Council; South Sound Street Medics; actress Marisa Tomai called on President Biden to Stop Line 3, and V, author of The Vagina Monologues.
Some protectors then took horses, canoes and kayaks, and walked through the drought-stricken river to the easements; another group drove to access the easement from the Duck Lake entrance. Hubbard County Sheriffs monitored the situation and blocked entrances, but no arrests were made.
